Remodelling of existing Dwelling

Insight Architectural Design were appointed to remodel and extend an existing two-storey detached dwelling at Melkridge. The dwelling is a modest, fomer agricultural building that was converted to a dwelling many years ago. The property sits at the top of a steep bankside with a small stream running below. The existing single storey rear kitchen extension was demolished, and a two storey rear extension added, on a cantilever, projecting out over the ravine. A small single storey side extension was also added to form a new entrance and cloakroom.

Transformative extensions remodelling a small stone dwelling, with a catilevered rear extension over the stream below.

The two extensions are clad in black corrugated sheeting, adding an agricultural aesthetic which sits comfrotably within the farm steading context. The lightweight construction is highly insulated timber frame.

The greatest challenge was the setting. The bankside to the rear is incredibly steep, making construction challenging. Foundations are concrete pads tied directly into the bed rock below. A steel frame then supports the timber frame, and the raised decking area, which provides a lovely seating area which looks over the stream below.

The build, carried out to a high standard by Micky Wright and his team at MTW Joinery and Building, is nearing completion. The property will then be available as a holiday let.
