Terry Farm
North Tyne Valley
Insight Architectural Design were commissioned to gain Planning Approval for the change of use of Redundant Farm Buildings in the North Tyne Valley. The initial scheme was for the conversion of one L shaped stone barn, to form three dwellings. Planning Approval for the scheme was achieved in September 2020.
The scheme looked to retain the agricultural form of the original barns. The existing fabric and façade of the barns were to be retained wherever possible. The open countryside location, and farm steading setting, demanded that materials were in sympathetic. External walls of random rubble sandstone pointed with lime mortar, with dressed sandstone heads, quoins and cills, are balanced with timber cladding and panelling. The windows are designed using a ‘dairy light’ style of glazing. External doors are of a timber panel style and screens are designed in a ‘hayloft’ style with a vertical emphasis to the glazing bars. While the exterior façade retains its agricultural heritage, the interior provides large, well lit, open plan family living spaces.
