River Cottage

North Tyne Valley

River Cottage is a stunning dwelling set in open countryside near West Woodburn in Northumberland. The property was previously in two parts, River Cottage and The Stables. The brief was to design a link extension that brought both elements together to form one dwelling, and create one open plan living space for family and friends to get together.

The original property was a former stone barn with a slate roof over. The design for the link extension needed to link both elements of the building together, while injecting light into the living space, creating a connection with the garden and outdoor spaces beyond, and form a central main entrance into the building.

The design employs a mixture of coursed random sandstone, Western Red Cedar Cladding, and aluminium glazing to form bifold doors, full height glazed panels and a part glazed peak to the vaulted ceiling. Light pours into the main living space, which includes a snug, dining space, and open plan kitchen with central island. A new main entrance door was also created with a lean-too porch over. This creates a focal point for visitors to the property, and shelter from the Northumberland weather.

This project was more than ‘just an extension’. This build has transformed and linked two individual dwellings to form one contemporary, light filled living spaces that opens up views to the surrounding gardens and countryside.
